Brewing Brightside: Plunger/French Press

Brightside’s Quick French Press Guide

  1. Boil the Kettle

    • Get that kettle going and prep yourself for some prime coffee brewing action.
  2. Prep the French Press

    • Remove the plunger, then give both the plunger and brewing vessel a rinse with hot water. This keeps your coffee hotter and tasting fresher.
  3. Add Your Coffee Grounds

    • Measure out 6 grams of medium-ground coffee for every 100ml of water you plan to use. Brewing half a liter? You’ll need 30 grams of coffee. For the freshest taste, grind your coffee just before brewing.
  4. Pour in Hot Water

    • On a digital scale, add 500ml of freshly boiled, filtered water to your grounds (or just measure out 500ml if you’re scale-free). Make sure all the coffee grounds are saturated with water, no dry spots left behind!
  5. Brew Time: 4 Minutes

    • Let it steep for 4 minutes to extract all those wonderful flavors.
  6. Stir & Skim

    • Stir the crust that’s formed on the surface to mix it in, then use a spoon to skim off the foamy bits and any stray grounds. This helps keep the final cup smooth.
  7. Let It Rest (Yes, Really!)

    • Now, here’s the secret: let it sit for another 5 minutes. This extra time allows the coffee to settle and cool a bit, making for a smoother, richer flavor.
  8. Plunge Gently, Don’t Go All the Way

    • Replace the plunger, but only push it down until it just touches the surface of the coffee – no need to press it all the way down. This keeps the grounds settled at the bottom, giving you a clean, floaty-bit-free cup.

Brightside Tip: Skim off any leftover floaty bits for the cleanest, smoothest coffee. Or, if you’re into that extra texture, leave them in and go full rustic with it!

Enjoy your perfectly brewed French press coffee, whether it’s just for you or shared among friends.
