Pour-Over Coffee: Fun, Relaxing, and Ridiculously Delicious

If you’re looking to enjoy the process as much as the end result, pour-over coffee is the way to go. With a bit of method and a lot of flavor, this brew method is a treat for coffee lovers everywhere.

Brightside’s Pour-Over Brew Guide

Here’s how to nail the perfect pour-over, whether you’re using a V60, Chemex, or any pour-over brewer you have on hand.

  1. Boil the Kettle

    • Get that water going!
  2. Prep the Filter

    • Place the filter paper in the cone and rinse it thoroughly with hot water. This removes any paper taste and preheats your brewer.
  3. Grind Your Coffee

    • Use a medium grind, like coarse sea salt. Each grinder is a little different, so experiment to find what works best with yours.
  4. Prep the Brewing Vessel

    • Empty the vessel of rinse water, then carefully place your grounds in the cone.
  5. Place Everything on the Scale

    • Set your pour-over cone on top of your brew vessel, place it on your scale, and tare it so it reads zero.
  6. The Bloom

    • Add 50 grams of water (if brewing 400mls of coffee with 24 grams of grounds) directly over the grounds, ensuring they’re fully saturated. Let the coffee “bloom” for 30 seconds, releasing gases for a fresh, full flavor.
  7. First Pour

    • Pour slowly and consistently in a circular motion, adding about half of your total water (200 grams for this recipe).
  8. Final Pour

    • Slowly pour the remaining water, reaching 400 grams on the scale by the end of the pour.
  9. Remove and Compost

    • Once brewed, remove the filter paper with the grounds. These can be composted for an eco-friendly touch!
  10. Rinse the Brewing Cone

  • Give the cone a quick rinse to keep it clean for next time.

Brightside Tips for Pour-Over Perfection

  • Keep it Steady: Aim for a consistent pour, targeting the center and avoiding overfilling the cone.
  • Watch for Dry Grounds: If you see any dry grounds floating, use a paddle or your pour to gently immerse them.
  • Brew Time: Aim for a total brew time of 2:45 to 3:15 from the first pour to the last drop. Adjust your grind or pour rate to hit this sweet spot.

And here’s a fun fact: the V60 gets its name from the 60-degree angle of its V-shaped cone. Happy brewing!
